T (Thomas) W (Whitman) Dorn (1857-1893)

Elsie Mickle's first husband was T. Whitman Dorn.  The first solid record found of T. Whitman Dorn is his burial in Chuctanunda Cemetery in the Dorn's family plot.  His birth year is given as 1857.

There are a few Thomas Dorn's with the birth year of 1857 but only one's early record match with later sources -- so I believe that Thomas's life began in Hannibal, Oswego, New York, where he lived with his father, Thomas O. Dorn (b: 1820 in Massachusetts) and his mother Nancy Wiltse (b:1828, and her parents, Benjamin Wiltse (1776) and Rebecca (b:1779).  In the 1860 US Census, Thomas is listed as Thomas W. in this entry- and other children in the home include:  Frances (b: 1853), Lydia M. (b: 1855) and Clara J (b: 1859).  The family had a domestic, Chole Watson and lived near other Wiltse families.

The family moved from Oswego to their own home in Duanesburg, Schenectady, New York.  In the 1870 US Census, Nancy is not in this census entry; listed in the wife spot is an Agusta/Augusta/Almira? (b: 1838).  The children from above are listed - minus Clara J., and a few more children have joined the family Jane (b: 1867) and Mary (b: 1869).

18754 June 6 T. Whitman Dorn (a minor over the age of 14) is placed in the guardianship of Amos H. Dorn (b: 1814) (believed to be Thomas O Dorn's brother).   Amos lived in Florida, New York.

The next year, in the New York 1875, T. Whitman Dorn is listed as a hired hand, working and living on the farm of  Thomas Radley, in Florida, New York.  Amos' was married to a Susan Ann Radley - I suspect this was either Susan's father or brother.

In around 1878, T. Whitman married Elsie Mickle, youngest daughter of Henry Mickle (b. 1812) and Elsie Van Wormer (b: 1815).

In 1880, T. Whitman and Elsie Mickle are in Mariaville, Schenectady, New York, with their one year old daughter, Ada (b: 1879).  T. Whitman's occupation is given as laborer.

By 1892, T Whitman and Elise and their three girls, Ada, Louisa (b: 1882) and Caroline (b:1889) are in Amsterdam, New  York.  T. Whitman is listed as working as a Teamster.

T. Whitman Dorn died on the 2nd of February, 1893.  He is buried in Chuctunanda Cemetery, along with the following people used to further augment my research of T. Whitman :

  • Lydia , mother of Amos H (T. Whitman's guardian) and wife of Ezra Whitman
  • Amos H (T. Whitman's guardian)
